Single of the Week: Konichiwa - Donny Benét

When first exposed to the enigma that is Donny Benét, a few pressing questions might come to mind: is that moustache serious? Isn’t this a headshot of a Miami Vice extra? And if he’s a musician, what on earth does he sound like?
While the first two questions aren’t easily answered, the third is simple: Donny Benét sounds like the perfect blend of smooth synth, reverb-laden vocals, a funky bass line and retro disco vibes that won’t quit. , Benét’s latest single, encapsulates all this and more in an 80’s-inspired jam that recalls new wave pioneers Spandau Ballet, right down to the ooh’s and ah’s of the outro.
And what new wave reimagining would be complete without a soaring saxophone solo and accompanying nonsensical music video? Watch as multiple Benét’s in pink suits trapeze around a Japanese-themed room, drinking champagne and serenading a black-haired beauty.
Benét's penchant for retro-styles is best evinced by a quick Google search that will turn out a link to the performers Myspace page (yeah, that's right, Myspace is still around). In any case, it'll be interesting to see how Benét's sound develops on his upcoming fourth album; a release that is sure to deliver more of the eccentric synth-pop Benét is known and loved for.
