Bermuda Bloom consist of Luke Davis: vocals/guitar; Dave Hutchinson: guitars; John Coyne: bass; Casey Allan: drums. Dan from BYO was invited by the group to their show at The Vic On The Park, Marrickville on Thursday 31st August 2017.
I left with my ears ringing, my feet slightly sore, and my back cold and sweaty. This is what happens when you dance really intensely in the middle of Winter in a warm, inner-west pub. It’s also what Sydney-based funk rock quartet Bermuda Bloom will make you want to do with ease.
The band had a cool, laid-back vibe, yet up-tempo with solid precision. Songs like Calypso boasted a hectic upbeat syncopated rhythm for an unrelenting near 10 minutes. Here, the band were focused while singer Davis shifted boisterously about the stage - the singer’s falsetto in the songs hooky chorus a reminder that white folk can play funk. Encompassing the set was a deep affection for speed and rhythm; basically, how much of each you can physically inject into a musical moment. On the night, such proved to be a drunken joy as punters hit the VB and Newtowner hard whilst getting footloose.
