A striking new photographic exhibition explores the twilight world of Sydney’s CBD through its secret spaces from 5 August at Firstdraft in Woolloomooloo.
Liminal is the first solo exhibition for Sydney-based artist Simon Del Favero, who is presenting a series of eight large-scale images at the city’s oldest artist-run gallery.
Del Favero’s work uses photography to challenge the viewer’s understanding of stationary objects and familiar spaces, but also importantly how photography can experientially reveal the space beyond the image.
“I’m interested in static objects, but that doesn’t mean they lack life”, says Del Favero.
“My work explores the deeper spaces in photography through everyday Sydney CBD locations, when the photograph itself becomes the threshold to another world, revealed by shadow and light. I hope to encourage viewers to look beyond their conventional field of vision,” he adds.
Liminal is on display at Firstdraft from 5-28 August 2015. Opening night is from 6pm on 5 August and is open to the public, plus Del Favero will give a talk at the gallery at 6pm on 27 August 2015.
Firstdraft is a national artist-led organisation that fosters and creates a professional context for the exploration of experimental and emerging arts practice. The organisation delivers a diverse range of programs that are committed to furthering critical ideas and practices in contemporary art.
