Every Thursday of March, galleries and cultural precincts across Sydney will be holding late night exhibitions and parties for Art at Night. A major part of Art Month, running from the 1st – 25th of March, Art at Night allows for an exploration of some of Sydney’s best spaces and artists, combined with some spectacular parties. Precinct nights, the major Art at Night events, give art punters the opportunity to ramble around some of Sydney’s most vibrant suburbs, oozing with culture and activity, before heading down to local galleries holding host to special performances, exhibitions and parties.
On Thursday the 1st of March, the first Precinct Night will be located around the Central City region before ending up at the Lansdowne Hotel. Art will line the streets of Redfern and Chippendale and galleries extending their hours until 8pm. All roads will then lead to the Art at Night launch party at the Lansdowne, starting at 8pm till 11pm, which will host to a plethora of art installations, as well as shows from local bands and performers.
Art Month will also be hosting special performances, interventions and parties in one of Sydney’s premier art spaces on March 8. The second Art at Night Precinct event, the Paddington-Woollahra Night, brings the party to the National Art School Gallery after a wander around Oxford Street. The second night event will start at 8pm, with the pop up bar at NAS keeping the party lasting ‘til 10pm.
On Thursday 15th of March, Art at Night makes it way to East Sydney for the third precinct night, and coincides with the opening week of the Biennale of Sydney. The third night will see an evening of live performance at Australia’s longest running artist run initiative, Firstdraft Gallery from 7-10pm; the gallery being the final location after a long stroll through Kings Cross, Potts Point and Woolloomooloo.
The last Thursday of Art Month, the 22nd of March, sees Waterloo-Green Square light up as a new venue on the Art at Night Precinct line up. A walk among this vibrant suburb and all the art it has to offer is the perfect precursor to the opening night of the ‘The Other Art Fair’. Located at the Australian Technology Park, The Other Art Fair runs throughout the entire weekend, from 8-10pm, and will hold a whole host of talks and behind the scene tours.
The party won’t stop there, however. The closing weekend of Art Month presents the 2018 Block Party staged by the TWT Creative Precinct, an initiative of creative conversions of a number of commercial buildings in the heart of St Leonards business district. On Friday 23rd March, from 5.30-9pm, 3 St Leonards blocks will be putting on a show, with a full program of free exhibitions, performances, music and workshops for all the community, as well as the unveiling of a new mural by Sophi Olding in Atchison Lane. A staple of Art Month, the Block Party is a creative celebration of local talent and art, and is a great recap to the massive month.
The Art at Night Precinct events are just the tip of the Art at Night iceberg, with Art Month putting on a massive list of evening events throughout March that’ll whet any and all artistic tastebuds. For more information on the full Art at Night line up, check out the Art Month website online.
