Mix of the Week: Paramida

She describes herself as “Berlin’s most hated”, but Paramida is certainly one of Australia’s most loved, already touring here twice in the space of a year.

With mixes like this it’s easy to see why we love her so much. Her sunny Balearic DJ sets seem much more suited to the climate and vibe of an Australian summer than the dark, cold, industrial nature of a city like Berlin where she is based. Yet Paramida and her record label Love on the Rocks represent a slow shift in the city to a more diverse club music scene beyond the heavy techno that has previously dominated.

Part of the increasingly rare species of DJs known purely for DJing, it’s a credit to her skill as a selector that she hasn’t needed any releases of her own to build a fan base and to gain the prominence she has today. Her rise as a DJ has come parallel to that of Love on the Rocks, which since its inception in 2014 has been a go to label for excellent originals and edits. Despite being Berlin based, the label has a globetrotting feel to it, with releases by artists such as Khidja from Romania, Zombies in Miami from Mexico and Australia’s own Fantastic Man.

On this mix Paramida keeps it slow and funky, perfect to listen to while hanging out somewhere hot and tropical. It never gets too syrupy or cheesy these types of mixes often do - aside from the Amerie edit and Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” - instead focusing on the weird, psychedelic and experimental side to funk and disco.

Paramida has become a fixture on the European festival circuit, so if your lucky enough to be escaping the Australian winter make sure to check her out if you get a chance.
