Single of the Week: Spaces / Kelly Lee Owens

If UK electronic producer Kelly Lee Owens was to be a magical entity, she’d be a good-natured witch with the power to transport people wherever they wanted to go. For that’s exactly what her ambient techno pop music does; takes listeners to another place.

On Spaces – a recently released track from the extended version of Owens’ self-titled album – a recurring, playful synth phrase and pulsating undercurrent of a beat establish the sense of the otherworldly.
Her crystalline voice dabbles among the verses and soars through the chorus, infusing the track with an honesty and innocence that is only enhanced by the gliding, string-like tones layered over everything.

In some mystical way, she has made Spaces evocative of being spirited away to some underwater world; where time is an irrelevant concept and everyone speaks in the same dulcet tones as Kelly Lee Owens. While tracks like Anxi and Lucid off her debut record carried traces of the dark and sinister, Spaces is pure benevolence and light; a song to teleport you to a place of etherealness and mystery.
