Single of the Week: Homebody - Nai Palm

Single of the Week: Homebody - Nai Palm

If you’re familiar with neo-soul outfit Hiatus Kaiyote, you’re probably familiar with the mastermind behind their self-proclaimed ‘multi-dimensional, polyrhythmic gangster shit’; that is, the sonic visionary Nai Palm. While Hiatus Kaiyote is known for its rhythmic and instrumental complexities, the first taste of Nai Palm’s first solo venture is a stripped back, subtly passionate prelude to her new project.

Everything about Homebody is lulling, from the simple glissando of Nai’s electric guitar to the breathy, layered harmonies which complement her soulful crooning.
While some Hiatus Kaiyote compositions feel packed almost to bursting point with elaborate ideas and arrangements, Homebody gives Nai – and her listeners – space to breathe and reflect, uninhibited with the task of having to decipher time signatures or tongue-twisting lyrics.
She somehow manages to utilise two instruments – the guitar and voice – to make a song that sounds full and lush in spite of its simplicity; a sure sign of her seasoned songwriting prowess.

There was a time when ‘Nai Palm’ was synonymous with ‘Hiatus Kaiyote’, but Homebody marks the separation of the two monikers and the beginning of an individual and ambitious chapter for Nai; one that will, ultimately, redefine her own name.

Her debut solo album, Needle Paw, is due out on October 20th.
