Single of the Week: Fischerspooner - Togetherness feat. Caroline Polachek
The word ‘banger’ has been used since the mid-2000s to describe everything from Groove Armada’s Superstylin’ to Toto’s Africa. And while the criteria that constitute a banger are essentially subjective there are some key features that represent a song’s ‘banger’ status. Such features are instantly recognisable in the new single from Electroclash duo Fischerspooner and vocalist Caroline Polachek.
Togetherness first establishes itself as your typical EDM club staple with its urgent tapping beat overlaid with fluid, rounded synthesiser stabs. However, the pulsing lead up (complete with digitised hand-claps, no less) precedes a drop that proves itself to be unexpectedly scattered yet smooth. No doubt this is thanks to the artful syncopation between the synthesiser and beat, which slaps you in the face and says, “This is no ordinary EDM track.”
Caroline Polachek’s ethereal voice not only provides echoing accompaniment to lead singer Casey Spooner’s utterances, but is given space to shine on own verses of her own. The Chairlift vocalist delivers hauntingly beautiful phrases, laced with electronic sultriness and a breathlessness that verges on covetous. The repetition of the last verse sees her pitch bent almost to breaking point in an ear-splitting swoop; a testament to Fischerspooner’s notorious predilection for the experimental.
While in many peoples’ books the term, banger is to be reserved exclusively for Calvin Harris and David Guetta classics, it’s also undeniably relevant to Togetherness. With its unique dynamic and stuttering electronic instrumentation it’s a track that is not to be ignored.
