In between the highway and the airport, DJ Atro stepped into the Backyard Opera studio for a one-of-a-kind exclusive mix. Fresh from his appearance behind the decks for UK grime legends Eyez and Big Zuu, DJ Atro brings the turbo-charged sounds of London’s grime scene together with a global club sound that has woven its way into the ducts and plasterboard of Sydney warehouse rave culture.
Beginning with dark, brooding synths as well as traditional instrumentation DJ Atro builds a mix that speaks to his talents as a producer to craft finely tuned yet highly percussive sounds. As the mix builds, the sounds sampled get gradually thicker and layered with vocal claps, a combination that wouldn’t be out of place in the basement clubs of Dalston or Peckham.
With signature DJ Atro flair, Cassie comes into the mix in a Jersey club break-beat remix, followed a footwork-inspired Nicki Minaj sample followed by a return to the ethereal sounds animating back rooms from Shanghai to Oakland. Rounding out this widely ranging mix is a cheeky taste of new work to come from Slim Set, which DJ Atro forms one half of along with MC Dev.
