"Carry It With You" – A piece from J. Carino

J. Carino's latest exhibition, "Carry It With You", is not just a collection of paintings—it's an environmental and political manifesto. Born in Littleton, Colorado, and now based in Riverside, California, Carino brings his experiences of both terrains into his work, capturing the essence of natural landscapes while exploring humanity's complex relationship with the earth. His artistic vision draws heavily from queer perspectives, challenging societal norms and reflecting the peaceful yet revolutionary transgression of these constraints.

In "Carry It With You", Carino's work moves beyond the typical landscape genre. The series unfolds a single visual epic, from serene pastoral scenes to the violent forces of floods and fires. Each tableau tells a story of resilience, positioning queer individuals as the heroes of a new American myth. Carino's response to both the growing climate crisis and the shrinking protections for LGBTQ+ rights offers a hopeful narrative: instead of focusing on fear, uncertainty, or societal burdens, he invites his audience to embrace queer pleasure and possibility.

The title of the show speaks to the personal and collective experiences we carry with us, whether they are emotional, political, or ecological in nature. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on what they hold dear and encourages them to recognise that they already possess everything needed to build a more just and joyful future.

"Carry It With You" opens June 26 at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York and runs until July 25. Don't miss the chance to experience Carino's powerful work in person.
