Aunty Social - Cortex

Canada’s Aunty Social has released her fourth and final single before the release of her debut EP, Titled - The Day My Brain Broke. The track: Cortex see’s the bedroom pop artist using instruments that previous fans will realise have now become signature to her sound. Warm wobbly and bright synth. Strong electronic percussion and soaringly emotive vocals.

Cortex takes a new stance from her previous releases with the percussion and bass creating a sense of anticipation and building towards something in the music. It feels like as a listener you are boarding a train at the station that is not stopping so you must run and jump to make it. It is pure excitement. The vocals create the dynamics in this release with harmonies layering a layer of warmth whilst the overall melody builds and drops into the necessary section changes. For me however the song’s strength comes from the synth melodies. They are playful and sporadic, giving the song elements of youthful joy.

Overall, Cortex feels like a trip to the circus. There is intrigue, excitement and each element plays a different role in creating an overall sense of anticipation that erupts into a final beautiful performance. This is a nice change up from Aunty Socials past releases as it steps back from the depth of her previous tracks, introspective aspect and is a simpler structure with an easy going personality.
