Release of the Week 3/6: KLP ‘Heater’

Kristy Lee Peters, aka KLP, is a DJ with a nine-year history within the Sydney music scene. After a successful five-year run hosting triple j’s House Party, every Saturday night, she has taken a step back in 2019 to focus on her music. With an album slated for release later in the year, KLP has been producing hit after hit. This week features ‘Heater’, her third release in 2019 and a decisively hot track to warm the cold winter nights.
With so much experience, it is easy to see how KLP nails the fundamentals of house music. Through a multitude of simple but contrasting sounds, she uses repeated loops, layered over the top of each other, to create music. The production in all sections is tight, with each narrow sound delivering a crispness that gives it a distinct character.
The rhythm section contains a steady kick and snare drum to drive the dancefloor, with the high-hats providing the energy. The bass section isn’t too deep, relying on the dynamic melody to drive it rather than a heavy drop. Normally this can leave a song sounding flat, but the lower notes are crafted so well in ‘Heater’ that it creates a steady background flow. In the foreground, KLP’s high electronic melodies and vocals come in to create some gripping hooks. The repeated vocal lines aren’t overly poetic, but that isn’t their purpose. Her seductive performance perfectly suits her call to join her on the dancefloor and feel the heat of bodies moving.
While the radio edit, clocking in at four minutes, is more succinct, the extended mix truly recreates that hot club experience. Throughout the six minutes there are subtle middle ground fills, like dark distorted drones and distant vocals, creating a constant source of aural interest.
On 'Heater' KLP said, "In the middle of Sydney summer I was struggling to get through days in the studio with temperatures closing in on late 30 degrees - I would sit in pretty much swimmers dripping in sweat but one morning the inspiration came in hot and heavy when I started a new project and smashed this out in the day. It's fun and rowdy and I can't wait to slam this out in the clubs."
