BYO Culture Guide May 27 – June 2

While it may seem like all of Sydney’s culture is concentrated around Circular Quay for Vivid, the galleries, stages and unusual places of Sydney continue to showcase the works of artists emerging and established from across this city’s diverse cultural landscape.

Opening: Maximilian Daniels |Inside Outside

Following in the footsteps of mid-century abstract expressionists, Maximilian Daniels works with light and colour to create paintings that construct abstract images. Whether evoking the in-between state of liquids such as glass, or the process of painting and layering of materials, Daniels involves shape and multiple colours to create images that give a sense of depth and suggest a process of observation.

Opening: May 30, 6 – 8pm

Firstdraft

Two evens at Firstdraft this week animate the triangular-shaped gallery and its outside courtyard area. The first, on May 31 is simply entitled Thank You. Curated by Eilish Fitzpatrick and Leila El Rayes, the night is a celebration of queer bodies living in pressing times. Come to revel in the divine and reach for transcendence.

On June 1, Sabella D’Souza of Canvas leads a discussion with Noula Diamantopoulos, Talia Smith and Spence Messih focusing on the notion of care. Framing relationships between artists and institutions and artists and themselves through the lens of care asks how empathy and support can create healthier environments in the arts sector.

Both events are free, although donations are encouraged at Thank You to support FIRE Fighting In Resistance Equally as entry.

Opening: Potential Space

Curated by Kathleen Linn and Sarah Hibbs, this group shop within the Kennards Self Storage building on Jones St in Ultimo asks how artists explore the interaction of space and bodies. Within the always changing and permanently uncertain space of a storage facility, the show looks at what fills a space that is normally pressed together.

The Hidden Pulse

From May 30 until June 2, the Opera House is hosting a series of screenings entitled the Hidden Pulse. In partnership with M+, a new contemporary art gallery set to open in Hong Kong, the works explore the connection between music and communities. On June 1 and 2, there will be a series of free screenings alongside talks with local curators and some of the artists involved in the video works.
