AFC Curated Pop-Up Returns to Sydney

This May, the Australian Fashion Council is bringing back their beloved pop-up retail space to Sydney’s Strand Arcade. A self-described “melting pot for building communities and supporting the growth of world class brands”, AFC Curated Pop-Up is designed to support homegrown emerging fashion labels via direct customer interaction and workshopping opportunities. Now in its third year, Curated allows select labels to participate in direct industry mentoring, a series of business development workshops and retail activations including the pop-up store itself. Curated Industry Mentor Jenny Layton describes the initiative as “so necessary for this industry. The seed that is being sown now is something that can work with businesses, and help shape them in what is an evolving landscape”. The labels on display during this year’s month-long pop-up are Allora, Autark, Blue & Grae, Cedar & Onyx, G Terlato, Isabelle Quinn, Ivy Niu, Laura Keogh, Lindsay Nicholas New York, Revel Knitwear, Salty Fox, Silent Arrow, West 14th, Whyte Studio. AFC Curated will hit The Strand from May 3 - 30, so there’s plenty of time to check it all out! Keep up-to-date by following them @afc_curated on Instagram.

Get the Billie Eilish look with this Australian Brand

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d know that alty-pop-princess Billie Eilish has been in town for Groovin the Moo and her own Aussie tour. For the keen-eyed fans, you may have noticed her very specific bejewelled style featuring plenty of heavy silver rings - courtesy of Melbourne-born brand, Heart of Bone. Founded in 2013 by former creative director and cultural zeitgeist Emma Abrahams, Heart of Bone has a certified pop-culture inspired distinct rock and roll edge. Abrahams has been working directly with Eilish for over two years to create custom jewellery pieces including the iconic Bad Bunny Ring which Billie wore during her Coachella show and subsequently sold out within minutes. "Billie aligns perfectly with the Heart of Bone honest, humble, dark and brave aesthetic, we are so proud to be working with Billie Eilish. We need more young women like her in our world." said Abrahams. Shop the brand here (https://www.heartofbone.com/).

Sports Illustrated Features their First Burkini-clad Covergirl

American magazine Sports Illustrated has received praise this week after featuring their very first Muslim model in a burkini on the cover of their May swimsuit edition. Somali-American model Halima Aden returned to Kenya, where she was born in a refugee camp, for the historic shoot. “I never really felt represented because I never could flip through a magazine and see a girl who was wearing a hijab,” said Aden. In an emotional Instagram post, the model thanked Sports Illustrated for the opportunity, saying “Don’t change yourself .. Change the GAME!! Ladies anything is possible!!! Being in Sports Illustrated is so much bigger than me. It’s sending a message to my community and the world that women of all different backgrounds, looks, upbringings... can stand together and be celebrated”.
