There’s a new little wine bar that’s popped up in the heart of Marrickville. “Where’s Nick” Wine Bar is a small bar that’s dedicated to serving and educating locals on wine’s that are a little bit out of the ordinary.
Brothers Julian and Domenic Abouzeid have teamed up for this natural wine bar in the heart of Marrickville. “Where’s Nick” asks the question of who is Nick. Julian explains:
“We are basically forcing him to be involved whether he likes it or not.” Explains Julian in an endearing brotherly banter sort of way.
Julian used to be a wine buyer for The Oak Barrel, and is hell-bent on providing wine for people that they otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to try. The opportunity that Where’s Nick presents is one to learn about and try things away from the norms of Australian Wine culture.
“We have like 3-4 bottles of everything and after that we’ll get something new in.”
The bar currently stocks a little over 120 bottles of wine, and that number is sure to increase to as much as 150 bottles with Julian saying that at least 90% of the wine would be organic. For the lay person Julian breaks it down into: “Organic is about grape growing… natural refers to what’s done to grapes once they are harvested.”
Julian also holds wine tasting’s, and Where’s Nick has a whole room dedicated to learning about various wines. Wine tastings vary from varietal based, to region focused. “It’s pretty light hearted, we just really sit around and talk about the wines and just talk a bunch of crap.”
However if wine is not your thing and you somehow stumble into this place in Marrickville, fear not. There is an impressive rotation of local and foreign beers powered by the local breweries of Marrickville. In asking Julian about being a bar in Marrickville he quipped: “It’s a lot of pressure, there are more breweries than we have taps, you can’t half ass it in Marrickville, people have pretty good beer knowledge here.”
Of course you’re going to need something to eat with all the drinking you’ll probably be doing, the boys have got you covered with Dominic manning the kitchen. “We are trying to replicate the old pizza recipes we had at Castille.” With a Spanish chicken and Vegan mini pizza as well as Cheese boards to go with your wine, or if you’re in the mood for something sweet you can get yourself a piece of cake.
As with the name “Where’s Nick?” There is a mural of the famed brother on the wall paired with a collection of repurposed tables and chairs and bar fittings made by Julian’s partner. “The table is old fence-posts and the bar is bed slats, the place is pretty much like that.”
It all adds to the family feel, the brothers and family come from a long line of hospitality, and Where’s Nick feel comfortable, like a couple of brothers sharing their wine with you.
