Coming in early 2018 is a snazzy addition to The Newport. The team at Merivale plan on opening an elegant 1930’s inspired brasserie and bar that overlooks Pittwater and the grounds of The Newport. Taking cues from grand hotel dining rooms of by-gone era’s, mixed with the laidback northern beaches ease Bert’s is adding another facet to The Newport and the Merivale group.
As expected the team behind this latest project is impressive, Executive Chef, Jordan Toft, sommelier Franck Moreau and bar Manager Sam Egerton are all playing their parts in putting together the experience.
Bert’s food will reflect the fit out; think early 20th century simplicity and luxury, with open kitchens within the dining room serving up raw classics, such as oysters and dressed crab, or charcuterie from The Larder. For your mains, you can choose a lobster from the tank, or pick to have your beef or fish roasted in the charcoal oven, or cooked over the basque grill.
“It is very special, yet completely fuss-free – beautiful, fresh produce, served simply and elegantly.” Says Toft.
The entrance will be lined with bottles of wine in a cellar style, curated by Master Sommelier Frank Moreau’s very best. At Bert’s, there is a focus on classic Aussie wines and vintages alongside European wines and emerging left-of-centre choices.
If you want to class it up for a few drinks, then Bert’s bar will take care of you. The cocktail list, developed by Sam Egerton borrows from grand European hotels and American country clubs. It’s a combination of classic cocktails mixed with local produce. The bar will also have a range of snacks from the main menu and dishes you can hold in one hand, without needing to let go of your drink.
Bert’s is an extension of the Merivale’s refurbishment of The Newport, created by Merivale’s design team of Justin and Bettina Hemmes, Akin Creative’s Kelvin Ho and stylist Amanda Talbot. It’s the next step in giving the Newport something for everyone after opening its outdoor area in March 2016
“Now with the launch of Bert’s, we can also offer a special experience for those wanting that little something extra. Outstanding food and exceptional service in a beautiful setting – but still very comfortable and relaxed.” Explains Justin Hemmes.
