When Mica Chen decided to open Meet Mica after leaving her career in accounting, it was really an exercise in creating something luxurious in the extraordinarily tough Sydney breakfast scene. Since opening, the café has carved out quite the instagram fame, and it’s not hard to see why.
Of course, providing the luxurious is easy with Chef’s like Lee Li bossing the kitchen. Chef Li’s impressive CV includes the likes of Tetsuya’s and Kensington Street Social. The food is very Japanese influenced with highlights of the menu being the $28 Lobster congee filled with possibly the creamiest egg I’ve had in recent time an Onsen Tamago egg. Which traditionally in Japan is cooked in the water of the hot spring. Other stars of the menu include the Fish Dashi, where even the noodles are made from Fish and of course the instagram famed Matcha Lava cake.
“The idea was to do something that other people weren’t doing. You know we have obvious Japanesey influences and I wanted to do something a little bit more high end.” Mica explains.
The fit out is light and minimal and was the work of Markco Studio. The light timbers and white tiles really let the food do all the talking. “They really just translated the idea’s I had in my head into the physical space.” Explained Mica.
If you want to try something different, disruptive and all round luxurious, give Meet Mica a visit:
