Canton! Canton! – exciting enough to yell - is the first restaurant from new dining group The Jewel Pantry. The newly opened restaurant is inspired by the vibrancy of Canton’s markets and will be serving up home-style Cantonese dim sum and roast meats from Executive Chef Jacky Chan and his talented team.
Chan has spent the last 28 years perfecting the art of dim sum. He initially learnt his craft under the mentorship of his feather before working as the head dim sum chef at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. Chan’s menu features that perfect and ever popular blend of the five traditional Chinese flavours – sweet, sour, bitter, savoury and salty - to transport guests from Sydney to Guangdong, the heartland of Cantonese culture.
Open 11am daily for yum cha, the classic affair offers traditional pork and prawn dumplings topped with flying fish roe. These smaller bites are served alongside Canton! Canton!’s signature ‘Phoenix Claws’ (braised chicken feet served on a bed of bean curd skin) or classic baked BBQ pork bun and pan fried radish cakes. For lunch, guests can dine on rich congee served with fish fillet, jellyfish, pork rinds and peanuts or try century egg with pork.
If you’re after the heavier styles of protein there’s a selection of roast duck, crispy pork belly and char siew from the Hong Kong roasting station. For dinner, hero mains decorate the table with classic Cantonese dishes like braised pork belly with preserved vegetables.
The décor of Canton! Canton! is the combination of efforts from interior stylist Dorian McCartney of Hydra Design and Raymond Teo of The Jewel Pantry Group. Combining the bustle and liveliness of the vintage markets seen in southern China with a contemporary interior, the restaurant features dinner booths inspired by opium beds, recycled Chinese shipping crates and artworks paying homage to industrial China.
“It was really important that the restaurant not only reflects the region we are inspired by, but also captures our dining audience in Sydney. We want our guests to feel the theatrics and the history from the moment they walk through the door,” explains Teo, co-founder of The Jewel Pantry.
With the Jewel Pantry Group taking over the Tim Ho Wan Outlets on George Street and Pitt Street Mall, there are many new contemporary Asian cuisine offerings set to make their mark on Sydney’s ever competitive dining scene.
