It’s no secret that Sydney is a beer drinking town. Home to Australia’s oldest pub and probably the location where the first frothy was pulled, Sydney knows its beverage of choice. But, Sydney is keeping up with the times. With the craft brewing capital located in the inner west, and inventive food and beer pairings at some of our finest restaurants, beer is not just your dad’s drink any more. Tying all this up into one extra-long week is Sydney Beer Week. To get you through it, we’ve wrapped up the best of the bunch for you to enjoy all that this versatile beverage has to offer.
Inner West Brewery Association Food Truck Festival
The inventive folks at the Inner West Brewery Association are putting on an afternoon of some of the best food and brewers Sydney has to offer, kicking things off for Sydney Beer Week on October 27. Taking over Precinct 75 in St Peters, where Willie the Boatman has its permanent location, the afternoon will showcase the range of brewers that are bringing the craft beer gospel to Sydney’s pubs, restaurants and bars.
Garage Project x Belles Hot Chicken
While some may tell you that you should drink milk to deal with a spice overload, we recommend beer. Lucky for us, Garage Project thinks so too and has teamed up with our favourite purveyors of mild to extremely spicy chicken, Belles Hot Chicken. At all of their Sydney locations, Belles and Garage project are offering five small run Gage Project beers, matched with five chicken ribs, ranging in spice from ‘southern’ to ‘really f**kin hot’. Running all through Sydney Beer Week, all day.
Fratelli Fresh x Goose Island
Across three separate events, Fratelli Fresh is showcasing their exclusive partnership with Chicago-based brewer Goose Island at the new Darling Harbour Fratelli. On Tuesday, October 30 Goose Island’s Imran Mahmood and Gabor Denes of Fratelli will be leading diners through a selection of pizzas and paired beers. For a slightly more unconventional marriage, on Wednesday, October 31 Goose Island’s range of IPAs, sour beers and stouts will complement Fratelli’s dessert delights. To finish things off, on Thursday, November 1, the partners in crime will come together again for a four course feast, including an entrée of kingfish crudo and a sour peach Haila, a main of duck ragout and IPA and finally, a chocolate brownie that perfectly pairs with the Bourbon County Stout, exclusive to Fratelli.
Automata x Modus Operandi
Pushing things outside the box, Automata are playing host to northern beaches brewer Modus Operandi for an intimate and experimental night on Tuesday, October 30. With four courses of innovative matchings of beer and food, diners will be talked through the combinations by the founders of Automata and Modus. More details are under wraps but if the reputation of either of the hosts is anything to go by, this looks like a particularly unique evening.
Young Henrys Rock & Roll Circus
Staunch supporters of all things loud, Young Henry’s are bringing their kind of party to Frankie’s Pizza By The Slice on Thursday, November 1. With an all-star supergroup on the mic and Young Henry’s flowing from the taps, this promises to be a decidedly raucous affair. Entry is free but registration is essential.
