This week’s Sunday Mixtape comes courtesy of Cronulla’s most psychedelic Art Gallery, Space 44. Curated by one of the founding members Jack Irvine, today’s mixtape will take you on a journey through lo-fi sounds, rock n roll and pepperoni pizza… Enjoy.
A lot of Sydney-siders may be familiar with the MCA and the national art gallery, but not so much smaller galleries like yours. What is Space 44 and what do you do there?
Space 44 is this little old house in the heart of Cronulla, basically we have an art show once a month showcasing a local artist mostly under 25, and we give them full control of how they wish to do their show, and we have a opening night and its pretty fun, long story short they sell all their artwork and go on to be millionaires!
Your artwork is popping with crazy colours and pop culture references. What are some of your big artistic influence?
My dads artwork is my biggest influence it’s so trippy and intense and I’ve never seen anything similar to it. I love a lot of art and artists though, Ozzie Wright is one of my art heroes and all round human heroes haa, i love a lot of Australian art, Ken done, Jenny kee, and also big American artist like Keith haring and Basquiat.
What artists/songs do you tend to listen to while you are creating artworks?
I like listening to David Bowie a lot especially the album pin ups its all covers from a lot of 60s bands like the Who, the Kinks, Pink Floyd and stuff and also Australian bands lately have been making some epic stuff, like Wax Witches, The Babe Rainbow, Blank Realm, Bachelor Pad, The Creases and the Hollow Bones. I could keep going but I should stop haha.
The references in your artworks and a lot of the pictures on your tumblr page are oh so 90’s. Why do you have an affinity with that particular decade?
I’m a little obsessed, i think its just all the colours and fun vibes they seemed to have, I think they (The decade) were kind of taking from the hippy style in the late 60s and then they added kind of a punk attitude maybe ha I’m not sure but I like it.
Space44 recently created an ‘outside art’ pop up exhibition in Cronulla Mall. What projects/plans do you envision for Space 44 in the future?
Looking into my crystal ball, I envision more punk band playing gigs in our little mad house room at space 44 haha its so fun, and then seeing all the artist do shows and have some fun doing them, outside of the gallery though we will do as much weird arty stuff as people let us do.
Wax Witches - Nightmare
