“I wanted to find songs from start to finish that has a certain mood – trying to build a sort of journey with emotion and feeling throughout.”
Sydney based graphic designer by day and music producer by night, Laurence Viegas who goes by his producer name Mondo1 embarks on his most recent adventure with his record label, Soul Spill Recordings. The label’s first release of tracks simultaneously exudes a dreamy vibe of smooth baselines and synths focusing on acid house and atmospheric-like sounds whilst embracing emerging local and international artists.
Laurence’s love for music started from a young age, inspired by 90’s nostalgia, namely video game soundtracks that fostered sounds of ambient techno – Laurence soon discovered his love for music inspiring him to pursue more than what 9-5 life offers.
BYO: How would you describe the first track of the playlist?
Laurence: It has a chilled acid house sound and kind of gets the mood going. These type of songs are what I’m drawn to for the release rather than bangers. Something that’s easy to listen to either by yourself or working but something that could also be great at parties as well.
BYO: Is there a specific genre you are looking for?
Laurence: Not really, it’s more of the feel of the song and not just the genre, by no means I think it’s an original idea. I’m just trying to produce a release that’s kind of different in a way, that’s coherent. I wanted to find songs from start to finish that has a certain mood – trying to build a sort of journey with emotion and feeling throughout.
BYO: Tell me about this artist.
Laurence: Local producer E Davd, he’s recently released a 12’ record with Natural Sciences from Manchester. He makes some really cool cosmic/acid house tracks and track in the EP; Habitable Zone is a real interstellar journey.
BYO: How long have you been producing?
Laurence: Seriously for like two years and on and off for about four years. I’ve been making music since I was a kid. I played guitar, played in bands throughout high school. When I was in primary school I played the trumpet, the trombone and drums – so I’ve always been drawn to creating noise.
BYO: What triggered your love for electronic music?
Laurence: When I was a teenager I loved and still love rock music but then I started going to raves and that really drew me to the underground music scene. I was really lucky my parents also had really good taste in music, namely St Germain and Sade from mum and a bit of psychedelic rock from dad.
BYO: Tell me about track 3.
Laurence: This is Zigzag by Sumorai, he’s from Sweden – I contacted him online after going through his tracks I just knew I had to have him on the label, I love his music.
BYO: You’ve lived in Berlin for a while, would you say living there influenced you?
Laurence: Yeah, I was making music before I went to Berlin and when I was there my friend Kris who makes really emotional ambient music taught me a lot when I was there which kind of compelled me to take it more seriously.
BYO: Growing up with music, how has your childhood influenced your taste in music?
Laurence: My music is influenced by 90’s nostalgia like video games and stuff I used to play with my brother. A lot of games from PlayStation 1 and Super Nintendo had soundtracks of ambient techno and electronica melodies – it always feels like it’s in the back of my mind when making music.
BYO: How do you get inspired when making music?
Laurence: Doing something new. Living in Sydney you can so easily get caught up in a routine trying to survive, but getting out to gigs or driving out of the city and getting away from it all helps the process of creating something. Both being inspired by others and having time alone I think is very important.
BYO: What made you decide to start this record label?
Laurence: It comes from a drive of wanting to do more than just dabbling in something. I always seem to dive into something that I love, and you can’t really rely on other people to make things happen and watch life go by.
BYO: What’s you plan from here on?
Laurence: I don’t really have a plan, just hoping to stay true to what you believe in and keep pushing on. I think the best way to do it is to be authentic and do what you feel is the right thing to do then good things will happen.
